The puddle on the floor is the part of the loss you can see. The rest is already on the move. Drywall wicks water upward from the wet floor line, inch by inch, in the first hours. Carpet pad holds water like a sponge long after the surface feels merely damp. Water slips under baseboards into wall cavities, follows the subfloor to the lowest point, and settles against sill plates and framing where no towel will ever reach it. A floor can look dry by evening while the wall behind the paint is still saturated.

That hidden moisture is what turns a wet floor into a real loss. Materials that stay wet start to change — drywall softens, wood swells and cups, glues let go — and after roughly 24 to 48 hours of sustained wetness, mold has the conditions it needs to get started. This is why mopping up and running a fan rarely finishes the job. The water you removed was the water that was easy to reach. Finding the rest takes moisture meters, and removing it takes controlled drying — which is exactly where we start.

Clean Water, Gray Water, Black Water: Three Different Jobs

Not all water is the same problem. Water from a supply line or a failed water heater starts out clean. Water from a washing machine drain or a dishwasher carries detergents and soils. Water from a sewer backup — or flowing in from outside — is contaminated and has to be treated as a health matter, not a cleanup chore. The trade calls these categories, and the category decides everything: what can be dried in place, what has to be removed, and what protective steps come before anyone touches anything.

The category also degrades as water sits. Clean water that soaks into carpet and lingers doesn't stay clean; it picks up whatever it touches and gives bacteria a warm, wet place to grow. That's one more way time works against you. Common questions

Should I turn off the electricity before I go into a wet basement?

If the panel is dry, reachable without stepping through water, and you know which breakers feed the wet area, shut them off — water and energized outlets, cords, or appliances are a genuinely dangerous mix. If the panel itself is in the flooded area, or you'd have to wade to reach it, stay out and call your utility or an electrician first. No box of stored belongings is worth entering water that might be energized.

Is wet drywall always ruined?

No — it depends on the water and the clock. Drywall that took clean water and gets professional drying quickly can often be saved in place, including the cavity behind it. Drywall that has swollen, sagged, or crumbled is done, and drywall touched by sewage or outside floodwater should come out regardless of how it looks, because contamination soaks in where cleaning can't follow.

Can I dry it out myself with box fans and a shop vac?

For a small, clean spill caught immediately — reasonably, yes. For anything that reached walls, carpet pad, or another room, the math changes. A shop vac only reaches surface water, and fans without dehumidification mostly move moisture from wet materials into the air and back into everything else. Meanwhile the water inside cavities and pad sits untouched, and mold's 24-to-48-hour window keeps running.

Will my homeowners insurance cover this?

It depends on how the water got there. Sudden, accidental releases from inside the home — a burst pipe, a failed supply line — are typically covered by most homeowners policies. Water from outside at ground level usually isn't; that's flood insurance, which is a separate policy through NFIP. Gradual leaks and sewer backups are commonly excluded or need endorsements. Check your policy, and document everything either way.

The water is gone — why does the house still smell damp?

Because it isn't dry yet. That musty smell is moisture still evaporating out of pad, drywall, and framing — and often the first sign that microbial growth is getting started somewhere you can't see. A house that's actually dry doesn't smell like water. Treat the odor as a measurement, not a nuisance: it's telling you there's wet material left, and it's worth finding before it becomes a bigger problem.
